The first book I chose to read this year was in line with one of my other goals: by Mark Manson. The reason I chose this book is because - get ready for cliché- I really want to achieve bigger things in life. However, the thoughts of these things I wish to accomplish, in combination with social networks immediately overwhelm me, anxious and depressed. In that order. To the point of having a glass of wine and hiding in bed instead. And all because I have a lot to give. In all honesty, I had not read any critiques about this book and actually thought it would be another self-help book that would tell me how capable I am to accomplish wonderful things in life while I cared less about what people think. Boy, I was wrong. Is this a self-help book? Yeah. But was he gonna tell me how capable I am and how special I am? No! He did everything but that and I loved it. He was brutally honest. It was confrontational and sometimes even painful. But it was necessary. Need to realize what things really matter in life are. What do I give a shit about? Here are 45 of, what I experienced to be, some of the more open eye quotes of .1. Self-improvement and success often occur together. But that does not necessarily mean that they are the same.2. Conventional Life Council (...) focuses really on what you're missing. Hard on what you perceive your personal deficiencies and your failures to be already, and then emphasize them to you.3. The world is constantly telling you that the way to a better life is more (...) You are constantly bombarded with messages to give shit all the time (...) Why? My guess: because giving a shit about more is good for business.4. The problem of giving too many shit is bad for your mental health. It makes you too close to the superficial and the false.5. Because there is an infinite number of things we can see or know now, there is also an infinite number of ways we can discover that we do not measure.6. Desiring positive experience is a negative experience; accepting negative experience is a positive experience.7. Everything worthwhile in life is earned by overcoming the associated negative experience.8. Trying to avoid pain is giving too many shit about pain. 10. If you're giving a shit about everything and everyone without conscious thought or choice, then you're gonna get fucked. 11. Not giving a fuck doesn't mean being indifferent; it means being comfortable with being different. 12. You cannot be an important and changing presence for some people without being also a joke and a shame for others. 13. If you are constantly giving too many shit about trivial shit that bothers you, you probably don't have much to go through in your real life to give a legitimate shit. And that's your real problem. 14. There is no value in suffering when done without purpose. 15. The emotional pain of rejection or failure teaches us how to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. And this is what is so dangerous about a society that embraces (...) we lose the benefits of experiencing healthy doses of pain, a loss that disconnects us from the reality of the world around us. 16. The secret salsa is in the solution of problems, not in not having problems in the first place. 17. True happiness occurs only when you find the problems you enjoy having and enjoy the solution. 18. Negative emotions are a call to action. When you feel them, you're supposed to do something. 20. People who feel entitled to see every occurrence in their lives as an affirmation or a threat to their own greatness. 21. But our attention is limited. There is no way we can process the tide waves of information that flow over us constantly. Therefore, the only zeros and those who go through and get our attention are the truly exceptional pieces of information (...) This flood of extreme information has conditioned us to believe that exceptionalism is the new normal (...) the flood of exceptional information leads us to feel quite insecure and desperate. 22. The rare people who become truly exceptional in something do not do so because they think they are exceptional. On the contrary, they become amazing because they are obsessed with improvement. And that obsession (...) comes from an infallible belief that, in fact, they are not great at all. 23. Everything we think and feel about a situation finally returns to how valuable we perceive it.24. When we force ourselves to remain positive all the time, we deny the existence of the problems of life. And when we deny our problems, we steal the opportunity to solve them and generate happiness. 25. What are the values that prioritise above all else, and which therefore influence their decision-making more than anything else? 26. (...) Self-improvement is really about prioritizing better values, choosing better things to give a fuck. 27. Often the only difference between the problem of being painful or being powerful is the sense that we choose it, and that we are responsible for it. 28. We don't always control what happens to us. But we always control how we interpret what happens to us, as well as how we respond. 29. No one is responsible for your unhappiness, but you. 30. Taking responsibilities for our problems is much more important, because there comes real learning. 32. The certainty is the enemy of growth. 33. Anything that shakes that comfort – even if it could potentially improve your life – is inherently frightening. 35. The improvement in anything is based on thousands of small faults, and the magnitude of their success is based on how many times it has failed something. 36. We can be truly successful only in something we are willing to fail. 37. We need some kind of existential crisis to take a look at how we've been leading our meaning in our lives, and then consider a changing course. 38. People with the right (...) avoid rejecting anything because doing it makes them or someone else feel bad. 39. People with strong limits are not afraid of a tempered tail, an argument, or to be hurt. 40. Conflict is not only normal, then; it is absolutely necessary for the maintenance of a healthy relationship. 41. Persecuting a range of experience denies us the opportunity to experience the rewards of the depth of experience. 42. The commitment allows you to focus firmly on a few very important goals and achieve a greater degree of success than otherwise would. 43. But the depth is where the gold is buried. And you have to be committed to something and go deep to dig it. 44. Our culture today confuses great attention and great success, assuming that they are the same.
